UTHM entrusted by the World Bank to develop vocational training programme in Jordan

The University’s expertise in Technical and Vocational Education (PTV) has won international bid and been given the mandate by the World Bank in vocational training development project in Jordan recently.

In the competitive bidding that involved bidders all over the world, UTHM, through its subsidiary, UTHM Holdings Sdn. Bhd., was given the responsibility to develop governing system and vocational training model for Jordan via Vocational Training Corporation (VTC) which is under the Ministry of Labour, Jordan.

A Consultancy Services Contract Signing Ceremony was held at the VTC Headquarters
located in the capital city of Amman, on May 8, 2011 and witnessed by the Ambassador of Malaysia in Jordan, Dato Abdul Malek Abdul Aziz.

In the event, Jordan was represented by its Minister of Labour, Dr. Mahmoud Al-Kafawin and Majed Al-Habashneh as Managing Director of VTC, while UTHM was represented by Vice-Chancellor Professor Dato 'Dr. Mohd Noh Dalimin and Project Director, Professor Dr. Wahid Razzaly.

In the ceremony which was attended by about 200 representatives from industries, skill training centres and officials from the Ministry of Labour, Jordan, the Ambassador of Malaysia in Jordan in his speech expressed his sense of pride by the selection of UTHM in developing this international project. He said that Malaysia is proud to be represented by UTHM who has won the international competitive bid in getting the project. He believed that with all the experts involved in the project, UTHM will be able to carry out the mission successfully.

Meanwhile, Professor Dato Dr Mohd Noh Dalimin in his speech mentioned that this project should not be seen as a mere collaboration between two agencies but it symbolizes a strong relationship between two progressive Islamic countries, Jordan and Malaysia. He expressed his hope that this collaboration will strengthen the bond of the two countries in other fields especially those in education and technical skills training, which are the niche areas of UTHM.

UTHM, at present, is the pioneer in technical and vocational education field in Malaysia and is the only institution of higher learning in the country chosen as the International Center for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (Unesco, Unevoc)

To implement the 30-month project sponsored by the World Bank, a group of experts led by Professor Dr Wahid Razzaly, who is the Dean of Faculty of Technical Education UTHM will also get the cooperation from other international expert peers such as Dr Dennis Harper and Steven McKee of the United States of America, Dr Jose Lacson from the Philiphine, and several others from different countries. Internal experts include Prof. Dato Dr. Mohd Noh Dalimin, Prof. Dr.Jailani Md. Yunos, Prof. Dr. Noraini Kaprawi dan Dr. Razali Hassan

During his tour to Jordan, Professor Dato Dr Mohd Noh also visited the University of Jordan which is the outstanding and the oldest university in the country, and held discussions with its President, Professor Dr Adel Tweissi.

UTHM delegation also visited the AlBalqa Applied University (BAU), a university with the most number of students in Jordan. During the visit, a Joint Declaration was signed by UTHM Vice Chancellor and BAU President, Profesor Dr. Ekhleif Y Tarawneh. The agreement includes, among others, aspects regarding researcher exchange, administration and student, collaborative research project implementation, collaborative seminar and publication by both universities.
