Final year students from the Faculty of Engineering did MMU proud by taking home multiple accolades in all three tracks of the Innovate Malaysia Design Competition 2011.
The winning final year project entry for the Altera track, "Hardware Control Using Hand Gesture," beat out four other teams from USM, UTAR an UTM. Lee Sue Han, Siew Wei Heng and Chee Vi Ling, who were supervised by Dr. Ooi Chee Pun and Mr. Cheong Soon Nyean were announced winners at the competition’s grand finale held at Altera in Penang on 11th June 2011.
The engineering design competition brings together multiple disciplines to create innovative products. Open to all undergraduate engineering and IT students in Malaysia, the competition aims to promote innovative thinking and cultures among Malaysian students. The 2011 competition was collaboration between MDec, Agilent, Altera, Intel and DreamCatcher.
Competitors may choose to compete in one of three tracks, and their entries must use components or instruments native to that track. The Agilent track uses Agilent USB modular instruments, the Altera track uses the Altera DE1/DE2 board, while the Intel track uses the Intel Atom processor-based desktop board.
The “Hardware Control Using Hand Gesture” was part of the Altera track. MMU also sent representatives for the Agilent and Intel tracks, both of which won second places in their respective tracks. Lim Chia Syan's “Two-Wheeled Balancing Robot” was entered into the Agilent track, while our entry for the Intel track was titled “SMART Transit System” by Choo Wern Shin and Lim Zi Yang. The projects were supervised by Mr. Lo Yew Ching, and Mr. Tan Wooi Haw respectively.
Entries were evaluated by Innovation, Specifications, Completeness, Practicality, Complexity and Working Design.
For their hard work, team “Hardware Control Using Hand Gesture” won RM5,000, an Altera DE2 board and an Altera Complete Design Suite (ACDS) software; “Two-Wheeled Balancing Robot” took home RM3,000 and an Agilent VEE Pro; and “SMART Transit System” bagged RM3,000 and an Intel Atom-based netbook.
Congratulations to all the students and their supervisors!
