Acclaimed movie producer imparts valuable tips to Limkokwing students
Ms Low being toured through the creative archives of the university – looking at the Guli-guli Limkokwing collection strips, during her campus walkabout with Associate Vice President, Creativity and Innovation, Tiffanee Marie Lim.
Making a movie is by no means an easy task. It demands exceptional talents, creative skills, discipline and professionalism on the part of the producer to put together various elements such as scripts, sets, costumes, production, direction, actors, storyboards and music score before the movie could wow audiences all over the world.
For the Faculty of Film, Radio and Television students, it was a rare opportunity to pick up some pointers on movie making when one of the country’s most celebrated movie makers, Ms Low Ngai Yuen made an appearance at the Cyberjaya campus of Limkokwing University of Creative Technology recently.

Lady for all seasons

A well-known programme host, writer and producer, Low is a winner of numerous awards such as the Audience Choice Award in 2003 and 2005, Best Short Film Award, Malaysian Video Award – recognition for her movies like ‘3R’ ‘Your World My World’ and the well-received short horror film ‘The Gil from Ipoh’.
Viewing the creative student works in the gallery of the design students of graphic design, product design and fashion design artwork exhibition.
As a movie producer, her other works include ‘Geng Bas Sekolah’, ‘Kapten Boleh’, ‘5Jingga’, ‘Adik’ and ‘Kasut Tumit Tinggi’.
Low - Head of Marketing and Communications for Carrefour Malaysia and Singapore - also picked up the Young Woman Achiever 2007 by ‘Her World’ magazine and Top 40 Under-40 High Achiever awarded by ‘Prestige’ magazine.

Creativity in performing art

As an eminent theatre activist of Kakiseni, Ms Low Ngai Yuen has dedicated her time into a decade old performing arts platform that brings together the industry targeting growth, creativity and innovation.
She runs a program ambiguously conceptualized to perk up audience development, featuring 100 hours of performing arts, outreach and community theatre development in conjunction with the centennial celebration of International Women’s Day 2011.
Her advice to the film and television student is the value in the work of performing arts in breaking through by reaching the youth; Low Ngai Yuen mentioned the fundamental aspect of performing art as it can be a career.

Twelve of them underwent training at Perodua R&D, two each at Sipro Plastic Industries and Ingress Technologies, and four others at Sapura Industrial. The three companies are Perodua vendors.
Deputy Minister of International Trade and Industry, Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir was there to present the certificates to the trainees. Those who trained at Perodua have been given temporary positions at the company for a year.
This Digital Engineering and Prototyping (DEP) training programme was created by the Malaysian Automotive Institute (MAI), which is a non-profit organisation under MITI. MAI’s DEP programme offers students access to high end software and hands on training. The module includes CAD (computer aided design), CAM (manufacturing), CAE (engineering), CAPE (production engineering) and Product Lifecycle Management).
Encouraged by the success of this pilot batch, MAI has expanded the next intake to 35 students, to be selected based on CGPA scores and an interview with both MAI and industry execs. Next up, MAI will work with UiTM to introduce styling design as part of the programme, which will help produce 4,600 automotive designers in five years, in line with the target set by the government.
After the scroll presentation, Dato’ Mukhriz clicked “Like” on Perodua’s new Facebook page to launch it. The MYPerodua page with the catch phrase “Lagi Best” will feature a contest to drum up fan count. Called “The Perodua Auditions”, one basically needs to show how much they love Perodua in a video to win a RM10,000 grand prize and five iPad 2s. UniRazak offers BIT programme for IT edge

Named after Malaysia's second prime minister, the late Tun Abdul Razak, the university is committed to becoming a principal centre of education in innovation, leadership and entrepreneurship.

The Faculty of Information Technology (FIT) was established to meet the increasing demand for qualified and capable information technology (IT) personnel in the growing IT industry.

Reports on the regional trends in human capital requirements for the IT industry in Malaysia indicate that there is an acute shortage of personnel, especially in areas such as systems and software development, computer forensics and investigation, and information security management.
Story continues below ↓

Also, FIT recognises the tremendous growth of e-business applications and online transactions as well as the fast adoption of wireless communication devices as part of daily gadgets.

The common things that need to go along with all these are information security, protection, cryptography and Internet security technology to protect users' privacy.

Computer security threats and the acts for prevention are now becoming a concern not only by organisations but also individuals. In response, FIT offers a multitude of relevant undergraduate IT programmes to cater for different needs of the IT industry.

It is the interest of FIT to produce graduates with quality substance and firsthand information from computer experts who are lecturers with profound academic degrees or long serving industrial experts.

Programmes are developed with collaborative input from industrial experts of reputable government or corporate agencies and relevant stakeholders.

The Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT) programme provides an advanced course structure and industrial-related specialisations in Computer Forensics, Information Science, Computer Networking, Multimedia, Medical Informatics and Software Engineering.

The uniqueness about UniRazak's BIT programme is that the body of knowledge delivered is a blend between academic essentialities and industrial practices. The blend enables students to expose themselves to scientific information technologies and information methodologies, and learn how they are applied to solve real world IT industry problems.

Once completed, graduates are equipped with the knowledge and skills to embark into a successful IT career or become IT entrepreneurs.

At UniRazak, FIT aims to produce quality graduates in IT disciplines through various programmes from diplomas to a PhD degree.

Quality education for all at Unisel

NIVERSITI Industri Selangor (Unisel) is the largest state-owned institution of higher learning and has successfully churned out many graduates to fill the employment needs of the state.

When Unisel started in 1999, it only had 200 students, compared to the 11,000-student annual intake in recent years.

With two campuses, one in Shah Alam and the other in Bestari Jaya, Kuala Selangor, Unisel has proven to be an institution able to provide quality education and training to students.

The university provides more than 80 courses in a wide range of fields including engineering, health care, business, communication and media, information technology, language study and biotechnology.

Unisel president and vice-chancellor Datuk Dr Rosti Saruwono said the university’s research and development programmes was currently focusing on biotechnology.

“We have sent a lecturer to Cambridge University in September to conduct further research in this field,” he said, adding that Unisel had collaborated with Cambridge and several other universities in England.

It is also hoping to have more twinning programmes with foreign universities.

Dr Rosti added the purpose for research and development programmes was to produce skilled and competent graduates able to compete in the rapidly changing global market.

He added that Unisel’s research programmes, especially that in biotechnology, was funded by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation and the Selangor government.

Asked if the university focused on any other courses, Dr Rosti said Unisel had introduced primary and pre-school education programmes.

Such courses are very popular among students, he added.

“It is very important to have the right teachers equipped with the right teaching methods to shape young minds,” he added.

Dr Rosti said Unisel designed relevant courses to fit current market needs.

“This way, the graduates will find themselves able to secure employment while industries will not be caught in the problem of being unable to find skilled workers.

“About 60% of the 3,000 graduates this year found employment before graduation day,” said Dr Rosti.

The university, he added, would be introducing a nursing programme in January 2011.

“There is a huge demand for nurses but there are not many institutions offering the course,” said Dr Rosti.

Unisel is also trying to intensify efforts to get more graduates to enrol in its post-graduate programmes.

Dr Rosti said 40 of the 400 lecturers in Unisel were PHD holders.

THE Allianze University College of Medical Science (AUCMS) in Kepala Batas, Penang, has its own way of doing things. Adopting the best practices of other medical schools worldwide, AUCMS' medical programmes are unique.

The programmes are carefully planned and structured to ensure students are taught and trained in everything they need to know to excel in their selected disciplines, may it be medicine or allied health science fields such as nursing, pharmacy and physiotherapy.

At AUCMS, the study of medicine is both local and international, in the sense that students undergo their pre-clinical and clinical years here while having the option of going abroad for short clinical training stints.

The arrangement is to ensure that students receive a quality assured medical education, which is under the close watch of the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC).
AUCMS president Datuk Dr Zainuddin Wazir said it was necessary for aspiring medical students to understand that there were many issues with studying medicine abroad such as the foreign learning and training environment, and language and cultural barriers, apart from economic factors.

He said it was not true that medical students must pursue their first degrees overseas, and that graduates from abroad were always better than those who pursued their medical education and training locally.

'The medical programmes in some countries are not up to the standards set by MMC, which explains why some housemen can't perform basic procedures like injecting patients in hospitals.

'Students who choose to study locally can be assured of the standards observed here. Overseas exposure can always be pursued when they decide to further their studies to the postgraduate level,' said Dr Zainuddin.

He said he himself along with AUCMS vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Mohamad Abd Razak and medical faculty Dean Dr Badrul Akmal Hisham Md Yusoff obtained their first degrees locally.

With the objective of giving students the best of both worlds, AUCMS offers twinning medical degree programmes with Indonesia's Universitas Sumatera Utara (MD-USU), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (MD-UKM), University College Cork, Ireland (MD-UCC), and National University of Ireland, Galway (MD-NUIG), as well as its very own MD- AUCMS.

AUCMS is planning to offer the MD-USU degree 100 per cent locally at its new RM15 million campus in Kangar, Perlis.

Students taking the five-year programme will be able to undergo their pre-clinical studies in Malaysia instead of spending three- and-a-half years at USU in Medan, Indonesia.

Dr Zainuddin said the USU senate had evaluated AUCMS' teaching standards and facilities and hopefully in two years, the degree could be done here completely.
'Next year will be the 10th year we are offering the MD-USU. It is time to move things here. We are now pending approval from the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and if all goes well, we may be able to start in September this year in our existing campus in Kepala Batas first,' he said, adding that even though it was an Indonesian medical degree, the standard was high and the marketability of MD-USU holders have never been an issue.

He said AUCMS would soon be unveiling the Kangar campus, which would house laboratories, medical clinics, teaching facilities and accommodations for over 150 students and lecturers.

On the MD-UKM degree, which AUCMS was offering for the second year, Dr Zainuddin said AUCMS students had been showing very encouraging results, performing as well as their UKM peers.

Its first batch of 33 students were now in their clinical year, training in the Kulim Hospital, Kepala Batas Hospital and Alor Star Hospital.

AUCMS also has big plans for its MD-UKM programme, with a large satellite campus in the Kulim Hi-Tech Park in Kedah in the pipeline.

The site for the campus has been identified and the premises will host the university-college's laboratory research activities.

'We are also planning to relocate some of our faculties to the new campus, which we hope can start running in September,' he said.

On the new MD-AUCMS degree, Dr Zainuddin said it was a unique programme, which offered students here international exposure through clinical attachments, elective postings and transfer programmes at medical institutions in Russia, India, the Middle East, Australia and the United Kingdom.

'We allow our students to select which countries they want to go for their clinical training for a period as short as one month or as long as three to six months to learn all they can about the medical scenario overseas for the advancement of their studies and careers,' he said.

A flexible programme, the MD-AUCMS is also open to mature students, who already hold degrees in other fields like engineering but are interested to pursue medicine.
Credit transfers are also accepted at AUCMS for those who wish to move to the university-college from other schools including those from overseas to pursue medicine.
'For those who decide to stop half-way in our MD-AUCMS programme, they will not leave empty-handed. They will be awarded a diploma but if they undergo six months of industrial training, they will obtain a degree,' he said.

UiTM - Untangling Technology

he partnership between Norzaidi Mohd Daud, Ph.D, from the Faculty of Business Management and Intan Salwani Mohamed from the Faculty of Accountancy has led to the development of TECHPROVEDTMSystem, a new business information technology system that could prove to be the way forward for detecting user resistance to technology and other IT usage problems.

Today more than ever, the momentum for employing emerging technologies to ensure more efficient delivery systems is building throughout industry and government. No one wants to be left behind and huge investments are made to acquire new information technology systems to this end. These investments, however, involve a complex mixture of technological, managerial and policy related challenges. Such investments often fail to live up to expectations if these risks are not fully understood or addressed in the first place. When this happens, policy makers need to know what went wrong but few have the resources to accurately and continuously evaluate the problem.

The Business-Accountancy research duo has shown how to get around this problem by developing TECHPROVEDTMSystem, a system based on their research on IT implementation in the Malaysian port industry. The study involving 357 middle managers from the port authority, immigration, customs and marine departments, incorporated three levels of analysis. Specifically, they sought to identify the perception of the middle managers on the effects of IT usage, examine the relationships between variables such as technology characteristics, task characteristics, task-technology fit, perceived usefulness, perceived resistance, user resistance, user satisfaction and the level of impact of the said variables on performance.

UNIMAS - SARAWAK CAN SERVE AS TECH LAB FOR IT RESEARCHERS

KUCHING: Sarawak can serve as a technological lab for IT researchers as it offers an insight into the digital divide between the urban and rural users.

Universiti Malaysia Sarawak vice chancellor Professor Dr Khairuddin Abdul Hamid said it had carried a 12-year project called the e-Bario in the effort to bring technology into the rural highland comunity for the Orang Ulu tribe. The settlement is also the producer of the famous Bario rice.

"Technology makers only concentrate their products for the urban users, but there are many more that have no access to these modern technologies.

"There is a vast potentials in developing new technologies for the rural folks," said Khairuddin said yesterday at the 7th International Conference of IT in Asia (Cita) which started yesterday.

The conference sponsored by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Computer Society and is collocated with the International Workshop on Internalisation of Products and Systems (IWIP 2011).

The three-day event saw 100 international participants including Google's User Experience Research Manager Dr Patrick Larvie who will be presenting his paper on Thursday.

Unimas's computer science and information technology dean Professor Dr K Narayanan said there were many challenges in carrying out the project including dealing with the reservation from the Bario community.

"When we first started, there were many objections to it, but once they realise and start looking at the bigger picture, they began to accept that it can help in their daily lives.

"With mobile phones coming into the picture, it is now a challenge to bridge that gap to the people there," said Narayanan. He said Unimas is looking at using the e-Bario program to help the farmers in their harvest especially in data collection.

"With rising demand for Bario rice, we want to help the farmers in bringing technology to them in the near future. This is part of the plan that we have for them," said Narayanan.

UMS to increase intake of foreign students

by Murib Morpi. Posted on July 20, 2011, Wednesday

KOTA KINABALU: Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) has sealed a partnership with Asia e-University (AeU) to further expand its online distance learning (ODL) programmes.

The university inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the new partner yesterday, aiming to increase the intake of its international students by better promoting its Postgraduate Master Programmes through AeU.

Under the agreement, two ODL programmes, namely the Master of Human Capital Management (School of Business and Economics) and Master in Education Management (School of Education and Social Development), will be offered starting January next year.

UMS vice-chancellor Brigadier General Professor Datuk Seri Kamaruzaman Ampon said the MoU paved the way for further collaboration with AeU, especially in promoting ODL programmes to foreign countries.

He added UMS was looking towards offering more programmes from its other schools through AeU in the near future.

“The significance of this MoU would be to encourage the expansion of our online distance learning programme globally in the industry of higher education, with AeU as a gateway university to develop and expand ODL programmes, thus generating impact towards our national economy,” he said.

Kamaruzaman said besides increasing the intake of international students in UMS, the move was also consistent with the national agenda to promote Malaysia as the regional international hub.

“This would be reachable with the MoU with AeU today, where AeU will assist us in promoting the ODL programmes through online portal as well as providing the technical training and expertise in handling the online lectures and learning activities to our academic staff who are involved directly in the ODL programmes,” he added.

AeU is a flexible, international university set up in Asia under the Asia Cooperation Dialogue (ACD). Its establishment is an initiative of Malaysia as the prime mover for e-education, with the support of 31 ACD member countries.

Headquartered in Kuala Lumpur, AeU collaborates with higher learning institutions and training centres in the 31 ACD member countries to offer academic and professional training programmes focusing on affordability, accessibility, and quality.

The institution has been commissioned by the government to collaborate with higher learning institutions in Malaysia to promote Online Distance Learning (ODL) and under this initiative, every higher learning institution is required to identify and develop two ODL programmes by end of 2011.

The signing was witnessed by State Resource Development and Information Technology Minister Datuk Dr Yee Moh Chai, where Kamaruzaman represented UMS and AeU was represented by its president, Professor Datuk Ansary Ahmed.

Ansary said Malaysia is currently ranked the 10th most popular destination for foreign students in the world, and promoting ODL programmes is another effort to climb up the rank besides increasing the number of foreign students coming and studying in the country.

He said among the regions the country has targeted to reach out to are Asean, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, the Indian sub-continent and Africa.

“Malaysia has a target of reaching 110,000 online students by 2020; we have a big task, this will not be successful if we as institutions and academicians cannot work together,” Ansary added.

UMS is the seventh public higher learning institution (IPTA) which AeU has ventured with in providing Malaysian education online.

Commenting on the signing of the MoU, Dr Yee said it was in line with the country’s effort to better equip itself to meet the challenge in creating proper human resource development through education.

UM - Majority of IT professionals want to upgrade skills to progress careers - but 41% want to leave IT

Jenny Williams
Tuesday 09 August 2011 17:26

The majority of IT professionals believe upgrading skills and qualifications is important to progressing their careers, according to research.

A survey of 2,200 UK IT professionals by recruitment consultancy Kelly Services showed 91% believe upgrading skills and qualifications is "extremely important" or "important" to career progression. But the survey also suggested almost half (41%) of respondents expect to switch careers out of IT in the next five years.

"As individuals take greater control of their careers in IT, there is a likelihood of employees moving in and out of the workforce for both professional and lifestyle reasons," said Dominic Graham, head of professional and technical services at Kelly Services.

The survey showed two-thirds of IT professionals (63%) aspire to a senior position. However, reasons given for avoiding executive roles included work-life balance (40%), concern about pressure and stress (28%), inadequate skills (10%) and lack of ambition (8%).

Separate research by recruitment firm Badenoch & Clark said that demand for C#, .Net and Java skills remains high as companies seek to upgrade existing systems. The report said companies are also migrating to Microsoft Exchange 2010 and Sharepoint.

"Employers require more third-line technical support as a result of the increase in companies migrating to Exchange 2010 and making use of Sharepoint," said Matt Gascoigne, operations director of IT at Badenoch & Clark.

"Upgrades to existing systems and new implementations are keeping IT recruitment activity bubbling away with only a small reduction in the number of permanent vacancies month on month".

Badenoch & Clark's research showed testing roles are also increasing.

"As employers move to an automated test environment more and more development projects are moving to the delivery stage. There are more vacancies for testing roles at all levels as a result," said Gascoigne.

In the public sector, NHS trusts are seeking Cerner and RiO experts to complete major projects, such as patient administration system upgrades and implementations.

Contribution by UKM to Government’s MyBrain15 programme

MONDAY, 18 APRIL 2011 00:00
By Abdul Ghani Nasir

BANGI, 18 April, 2011 – Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) hopes to produce at least 5,000 PhD holders by 2015 as part of its contribution towards fulfilling the government’s MyBrain15 programme which aimed at producing 60,000 PhDs by 2020.

In line with this, UKM has mapped out various strategies including offering five fellowship programmes, reforming some of its faculties and setting up off-shore centres for postgraduate studies.

Director of the Centre for Graduate Management, Prof Dr Aini Hussain said the MyBrain15 programme is one of the critical agenda of the government to achieve Vision 2020.

As part of that agenda the government had drawn up its various transformation plans including the Economic Transformation Plan (ETP). Through ETP a new economic model with emphasis on innovation is targetted.

Under the MyBrain15 project the Ministry of Higher Education is offerring the MyPhd, MyMaster, PhD Industry and Academic Training Scheme IPTA (SLAI) programme.

It is part of part of the nation’s critical agenda which aims at producing a group of high knowledge work force who will act as catalysts to spur research and innovation.

“In line with this, UKM has targeted to have 15,000 registered post graduates by 2015,” she said.

Prof Aini said as part of its plan to contribute to the government’s effort, UKM is offering five fellowship programmes made up of the UKM Fellowship, UKM Premier Fellowship, Research University Fellowship, Research Grant Fellowship and the OUP (Research University Operations) Fellowship. A total of RM5 million has been allotted for the fellowships this year.

“The UKM Premier Fellowship was accepted by the University’s Senate recently and will be advertised very soon for the 2011/2012 intake, she said.

For the fellowship schemes, all full-time students can apply and it covers all fields of study with emphasis given to the eight research niche of UKM.

Prof Aini said UKM will be also be transforming a few faculties which will focus on post graduates programmes.

“The Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic and International Affairs) and the Centre for Graduate Management have identified three faculties that will be transformed. They are the Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Education and Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment.

“The faculties needed to have a registration target of 70% post graduates against 30% first degree students. The undergraduates will become feeders for their post graduate programmes.

“The other faculties must set a target ratio of 50%:50% graduate and undergraduate students by 2015. To date UKM have 14 institutes and the Graduate School of Business (GSB) that only cater for post graduate studies.

On the formation of the off-shore studies centres, she said the programme comes as part of the university’s Education Co-operation Agreement (ECA).

UKM has thus far succeeded in forging a few education co-operation with universities in Indonesia involving the Faculty of Education, Faculty of Science and Technology and the Faculty of Economics and Management.

The Faculty of Law has recently signed a co-operation agreement with Hunan University of China.

UKM currently have 3,160 PhD students and she believes that the plans were realistic and achievable.

For the MyPhD and MyMaster programme the terms and condition set by the Ministry of Higher Eduction applies. Candidates targeted are unemployed graduates without permanent incomes, staff from the private sector as well as lecturers from the Private Institutions of Higher Learning.

FRESH from being granted university college status, Penang-based Allianze University College of Medical Sciences (AUCMS) has embarked on an aggressive expansion exercise in pursuing its vision to be the top meducationist in the nation and the world by the year 2015.

The main thrust of the expansion is in its medical degree programmes that includes the introduction of AUCMS' own medical degree programme by this September, and the opening of its three satellite campuses.

The all-new AUCMS medical degree programme will complement the existing four medical degree programmes offered by the college, boosting its intake capacity to more than 400 places annually.

To strengthen AUCMS position as the leading private medical and applied sciences college in the northern region, it will soon open satellite campuses in Perlis, Kedah, and Perak.

Since its inception in 2002, AUCMS has been offering four medical degree programmes in collaboration with Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) in Indonesia, and two reputable Ireland universities; University College Cork (UCC) and National University of Ireland (NUI) Calway.

Graduates of these programmes receive medical degrees from the respective universities and are fully accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) agency and Malaysian Medical Council (MMC).

Another key milestone for AUCMS this year is that the MD USU programme will be carried out fully in Malaysia; students will no longer have to travel to Sumatra for their pre-clinical studies.

In a landmark move to further facilitate aspiring doctors to enrol in the MD USU and MD AUCMS programmes, the college is inking a deal with local banks to offer loan facilities for eligible students taking the two programmes.

KUANTAN: The Pahang government and Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) have jointly set up a research and excellence centre in biodiversity and biotechnology in a move to optimise and boost its market potentials.

The project would also meet the demand for experts in research, development and commercialisation activities (R&D&C).

The centre was officially opened by Sultan of Pahang Sultan Ahmad Shah in conjunction with the launching of a mini Malaysian Agriculture, Horticulture and Agrotourism (MAHA) show at an agriculture park in Indera Mahkota near here recently.

UMP vice chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Daing Nasir Ibrahim said the university was already acting as an adviser to the state’s Science, Technology and Information Technology committee in developing biodiversity and biotechnology for commercial purposes.

“The centre will provide training, services, consultation and expertise of UMP’s researchers for entrepreneurs in the two fields.

“The efforts are expected to help realise the state’s biodiversity-biotechnology strategic plan to sustainably reap benefits from the natural wealth and resources and boost economic activities,’’ he added.

Daing said UMP would also develop related R&D&C projects aimed at creating products with higher added values.

Among the functions of the centre, which covers an area of 700 square metres, included identifying species with commercial values, conducting tests to validate potential chemicals derived from plants, developing processes to extract essence as well as analysing microbes in water and soil.

The centre would also act as a reference centre for the public and students to get information and be exposed to biodiversity through activities carried out in the park.

KUALA LUMPUR, 19 April. – UNIVERSITI Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and SRI International (founded as Stanford Research Institute)), Menlo Park, California will benefit from an intelligent collaboration to improve the commercialisation strategies for UTM’s most promising research products.
The two institutions today signed a memorandum of agreement in Impiana Hotel, KLCC to further investigate the collaboration initiatives that relate to professional activities, particularly in the area of innovation strategies and processes.
UTM has identified the need to commercialise more of its research products to the local and international market aligned with the university’s goal to achieve better Research University (RU) purpose. An effort on polishing its research output has been the best step to benefit the RU fund distributed by the government.
The recent series of Commercialisation Readiness Workshops nurtures UTM’s researchers focus to generate more valuable Intellectual Property and prepare them for commercialisation. This effort includes several processes such as exposing UTM’s researchers and staff to SRI’s 5 Disciplines of Innovation (5DOI) program, a set of innovation best practices for developing accountable and sustainable business models, determining go‐to-market plans, building sound business plans, and delivering value to customers.
By engaging with SRI since 2010, UTM personnel have participated in various executive briefings and programs for researchers and staff, starting with the first twenty‐seven (27) UTM researchers and staff who were trained in the SRI 5 Disciplines of Innovation program (5DOI), partially through AKEPT sponsorship.
Several research teams were trained to pitch their value propositions in extended “venture capital‐like” sessions. These sessions have benefitted many UTM research teams, officials and staff. In addition, by forming this partnership, several UTM products have been advanced from research and development phases to commercialisation strategies.
At the end of this program, UTM hopes to generate sustainable and innovative technologies that are commercialized successfully and to continue to improve its remarkable research and development capabilities.

UTAR to offer Journalism in Chinese Media programme

Deputy Minister of Higher Education YB Dato' Hou Kok Chung handed over the approval letter from the Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE) for Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) to offer its Bachelor of Arts (Hons) Journalism in Chinese Media at a presentation ceremony held at UTAR Petaling Jaya Campus on 4 April 2011.

With this new addition of Journalism in Chinese Media programme, which will be offered in coming May intake, UTAR now has 101 approved programmes from the MoHE, comprising 11 PhD, 20 Master's, 60 full-time and six part-time Bachelors, and four Foundation programmes.

UTAR started with only eight Bachelor's programmes in 2002 offered by three faculties in a single campus and today these 101 programmes are offered by nine faculties and the Institute of Chinese Studies in four campuses.

The number of students grows from the initial 411 in 2002 to more than 19,000 today. The university has produced more than 22,000 graduates and 97 percent of them were employed within six months after completing their programmes.

"In deciding to launch a new programme, we conduct market surveys to ensure our graduates are absorbed into employment market to continue our trend of 97 percent of our graduates being employed six months after their final exam," said UTAR President Ir. Professor Dato' Dr Chuah Hean Teik.

Professor Chuah added that UTAR had decided to offer the Journalism in Chinese Media programme in view of the growing number of users of Chinese language, the mushrooming of Chinese media in the country and also the emergence of China as a global economic power.

"While it is trivial for an institution to receive approval letters, what is not trivial is that Chinese has been approved as a medium of instruction," said Deputy Minister of Higher Education Dato' Dr. Hou Kok Chung when commenting on the approval of UTAR Bachelor of Arts (Hons) Journalism in Chinese Media to be conducted in two languages: English and Mandarin.

"For the Master of Arts (Chinese Studies) programme [currently conducted in UTAR], it was further approved that its thesis could be written in any of the three languages - English, Bahasa Malaysia or Chinese," continued Dato' Hou, adding that the Ministry of Higher Education had taken on the liberal stand on use of medium of instruction in view of achieving greater academic excellence.

The university anticipated that there are ample employment opportunities for graduates of Chinese Media Journalism in Malaysia . In addition, these graduates could also work in China , Taiwan , Hong Kong , Singapore and other countries with growing Chinese readership.
