Quality education for all at Unisel

NIVERSITI Industri Selangor (Unisel) is the largest state-owned institution of higher learning and has successfully churned out many graduates to fill the employment needs of the state.

When Unisel started in 1999, it only had 200 students, compared to the 11,000-student annual intake in recent years.

With two campuses, one in Shah Alam and the other in Bestari Jaya, Kuala Selangor, Unisel has proven to be an institution able to provide quality education and training to students.

The university provides more than 80 courses in a wide range of fields including engineering, health care, business, communication and media, information technology, language study and biotechnology.

Unisel president and vice-chancellor Datuk Dr Rosti Saruwono said the university’s research and development programmes was currently focusing on biotechnology.

“We have sent a lecturer to Cambridge University in September to conduct further research in this field,” he said, adding that Unisel had collaborated with Cambridge and several other universities in England.

It is also hoping to have more twinning programmes with foreign universities.

Dr Rosti added the purpose for research and development programmes was to produce skilled and competent graduates able to compete in the rapidly changing global market.

He added that Unisel’s research programmes, especially that in biotechnology, was funded by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation and the Selangor government.

Asked if the university focused on any other courses, Dr Rosti said Unisel had introduced primary and pre-school education programmes.

Such courses are very popular among students, he added.

“It is very important to have the right teachers equipped with the right teaching methods to shape young minds,” he added.

Dr Rosti said Unisel designed relevant courses to fit current market needs.

“This way, the graduates will find themselves able to secure employment while industries will not be caught in the problem of being unable to find skilled workers.

“About 60% of the 3,000 graduates this year found employment before graduation day,” said Dr Rosti.

The university, he added, would be introducing a nursing programme in January 2011.

“There is a huge demand for nurses but there are not many institutions offering the course,” said Dr Rosti.

Unisel is also trying to intensify efforts to get more graduates to enrol in its post-graduate programmes.

Dr Rosti said 40 of the 400 lecturers in Unisel were PHD holders.

UTP - UNIVERSITI TEKNOLOGI PETRONAS AND COMSATS INSTITUTE OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (CIIT) INKED DEAL TOWARDS THE PURSUIT OF INTERNATIONALISATION OF EDUCATION (18 OCT 2010)

The signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) and COMSATS Institute of Information Technology (CIIT) marked another important milestone for UTP in its quest to attain academic and R&D excellence. The MoU, which was signed by Datuk Dr Zainal Abidin Haji Kasim, Rector of UTP and Dr. Syed Muhammad Junaid Zaidi, Rector of CIIT and witnessed by Associate Professor Dr Abdul Rashid Abdul Aziz, Director of Research Innovation Office of UTP and Dr. Imtinan Elahi Qureshi, Executive Director and Convener, Board of Governance of CIIT, took place on 18 October 2010 at the campus in Bandar Seri Iskandar.

Through the MoU, both parties will pursue many significant activities, including staff development programme, undergraduate and postgraduate student exchange and joint research activities.



CIIT started its journey in 1998, and established its first campus at Islamabad in April 1998. In August 2000, in recognition of CIIT's achievements, the Federal Government granted it the status of a Degree Awarding Institute (DAI) through promulgation of its charter. The CIIT, besides its principal campus at Islamabad, has six other fully functional campuses at Lahore, Abbottabad, Wah, Attock, Sahiwal and Vehari, while a few more campuses are in different planning stages. On the advice of the Federal Government, efforts are also under way for opening an overseas campus in the Gulf region.

UTP was established in 1997 and offers a wide range of engineering and technology programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, complemented by a strong focus on Research and Development (R&D). The programmes are designed with high industry relevance. It has grown to be one of the most prominent private universities in Malaysia and currently has about 5,600 undergraduates and 900 postgraduates. Recently, UTP along with 17 other universities has been rated as Tier 5 (Excellent) University for year 2009 Rating System for Malaysian Higher Education Institutions (SETARA ’09) by the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE), Malaysia.
Also present during the event were other delegates from CIIT and members of UTP Management Committee and Senate. Later, the delegates were brought for a tour around the campus.

MUST - DIRECT INTO UNIVERSITY OF TASMANIA

12 May 2011 – Malaysia University of Science and Technology (MUST) on 9 May signed an agreement with University of Tasmania (UTAS) to establish a pathway for students to gain direct entry into the Hobart-based university’s Faculty of Business for the Master of Business Administration (MBA) programme. The agreement was also to foster a closer relationship between the two institutions.

With the agreement, students who have either passed their Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) at MUST, completed four UTAS MBA courses at MUST and worked for at least six months after graduation in a relevant business area, can be directly admitted into the Graduate Certificate of Management leading to the MBA at UTAS.

These courses include Managerial Economics, Organisational Behaviour, International Business, Management Accounting & Finance, and Advanced Financial Accounting, all of which carry a combined 20 credits which are transferrable to UTAS.

“We are very proud to have UTAS as our partner as students now have more opportunities to take their academic qualifications to a higher level through this new pathway. UTAS is a world-class institution with a common interest with MUST to educate students for global employability,” said MUST President, Dr Leong Choon Heng.

The Business School at MUST offers several programmes, including Bachelor of Business Administration with specialisation in finance, accounting, marketing and human resource management and Diploma in Business Studies. As MUST expands its international collaborations, students studying at MUST will have many options and pathways to overseas universities and international institutions.

The agreement also represents MUST’s continuous working relationships with strategic and top-level international partners in its mission to establish a world-class university that will produce highly employable graduates in a wide range of fields. The collaboration with UTAS is part of MUST’s growth and diversification plans, which involves expanding into business and other schools. MUST has lined up numerous international collaborations this year as part of its expansion programme.

MUST began in collaboration with the world-renowned Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), which assisted in the setting up of its postgraduate and research programmes and also structured an MIT method of teaching and learning in its faculty, all of which are being employed today.

“We are always keen to establish global links and provide opportunities for the best and brightest students to excel in their respective fields. Quality education and opportunities for further studies are the key to undergraduate and postgraduate studies, and we believe that UTAS is an ideal match to help us achieve this goal. Today’s event also means that MUST and UTAS have embarked on a common mission to develop Malaysian talents for job opportunities of the future,” he added.

Real Learning Experience for KLMUC's Broadcasting & Film students

Kuala Lumpur Metropolitan University College (KLMUC) students received a surprised appearance by Indian heart-throbs BharathSrinivasan and Shamsuddin Ibrahim aka Shaamat the campus recently.

Both celebrities had come to Malaysia film scenes for their upcoming movie project and were taking time off from their busy schedule to meet KLMUC’s Broadcasting and Film students.

Thisvisit provided an opportunity for KLMUC to inspire local students, especially in the Broadcasting and Film programmes and to develop a better understanding on how the Cinema industry in Indiaworks. This visit would also help prepare the students in their chosen field to their future careers.

Students were very enthusiastic to see Bharath and Shaamin person and threw various questions about the actors and their working experience.

Speaking to students in Tamil, Bharath was able to share his own personal experience in the film industry to the students adding success it is an effort that requires a lot of commitment.

"There is no such thing as shortcuts in life. Take life as it goes and work hard for your dreams," he said in Tamil.

Shaamalso conveyed to students that opportunities in life are numerous and that the potential for creativity is something that should not be missed.

"You young guys should take the challenge and don't miss it. It's not just about acting but it involves a lot of creativity,"Shaam said while adding that success in any venture requires a strong passion and a belief in oneself to move on forward.

Shaam also explained that technology in the world is changing quickly which creates a highly competitive industry that is often unpredictable. He also stressed that even in any field, one must also not forget to create their own network and to always allow themselves room for the flexibility to learn.

"First you must understand that there are several crafts of the movie industry that you must learn," Shaam advised. But more importantly, his advice for the student is to have the discipline, determination and dedication as the key to success.

Shaam first started as a model in Bangalore, he ventured into the film industry in 2000 with the Tamil movie Kushi directed by S.J. Suryah. With over 20 films under his belt, Shaam is a multilingual actor whose works include Kick, 12B and Iyarkai. He was recently in Malaysia for scene in his upcoming film, 6.

Bharath who was already a trained dancer since he was 11, debuted in a musical box office hit directed by S.Shankar, Boys, where his dance skills made him famous.His other releases include Chennai Kadhal, February 14 and Veyil. His upcoming releases are Thiruthani, Perarasu, Vaanamand the Tamil remake of Silambarasan, from a telugu blockbuster Vedam.

KLMUC offers more than 50 different courses under seven Faculty schools. Students will be able to pursue a course in Media Studies, Built Environment, Health Science, Art & Design, Engineering & Information Technology, Business & Management as well as Hospitality & Tourism.

Application fees are only RM100 while Registration is RM300 for both Diploma and Degree level programmes.

Students can also receive assistance in the form of financial aid from PTPTN (National Higher Education Fund Corporation) and MARA. The campus also offers a well-equipped accommodation facility for non-resident students with easy transportation access to ensure a positive learning experience

KOLEJ Universiti Insaniah (KUIN) students will receive full 24-hour broadband service at a speed of 128kbps by end of May.
According to KUIN Insan System Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Mansor Mahmud, the system was now undergoing tests to ensure the service would run smoothly by next month.
He said the 128kbps speed was sufficient for students to surf the Internet and to download emails and documents at the campus and hostel.
“Those who wish to enjoy a higher speed of up to 512kbps speed will have to purchase an additional booster from the company,” he said.
Mansor also said the students did not get free broadband service provided by Packet One Networks (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (P1) as reported in MetroNorth on March 17 under the heading ‘Varsity gets free 24-hour broadband service’.
He said the fee for the broadband had already been included in the students’ study fees and they only need to register online to enjoy the broadband service.
He added that for the 512kbps speed booster, students could purchase the booster online or at Insan ICT shop located within the campus for a minimum price that would be announced later.
